Banshee Chapter

At night, a man in sunglasses lounges on the hood of a car under a harsh light, talking to a woman standing in the dark, with city lights across the water behind them.

Solid stuff to start off the month. I’m not a huge fan of government conspiracy-inspired horror but I do love Lovecraftian horror fueled by numbers stations conspiracies.

There’s some indie-isms that leaked their way in here, like clearly using a hi-res camera and just throwing a handycam HUD on it, or LoRA transmissions coming through crystal clear, but you gotta forgive that. They also bat .500 on actually earning jump scares.

Love the weird not-quite-Hunter S. Thompson stand-in they got for this too. Holy shit nvm that’s Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs. We're so back.

Not loving when someone responds to “it’s possible” with “it’s probable”, not a lot of evidence there for your checkmate moment chief.

There’s some plot holes here that feel exceptionally put on display by the ending but nothing that made the film feel like it wasn’t worth watching; rather, it felt like some writers were just trying to make a grandiose twist seem smart and they just didn’t stick that landing.

Score: C+
