Spoopstober
Dead Ringers
I’m still not really sure how I feel about this film.
Some Pros:
- Jeremy Irons plays twins and does so rather convincingly as one declines into substance abuse and madness and the other stays in a weird, radical control of the situation.
- The set and costuming on this story is really very good, you don’t have a hard time believing that they are wealthy socialite doctors at all.
- The twins are gynecologists and there is some slight body horror (i.e. the scene where Bev has taken it upon himself to have custom tools with his own design for “examining mutant women”. Bleh.)
…and some cons:
- Double the Jeremy Irons may in fact be too much Jeremy Irons for my taste.
- Same problem I had with Possessor last week: regardless of how well it’s acted out, nobody acts like these people.
- When faced with their fears of losing control in any way, both characters just become tedious feedback loops of themselves. Sure that might be true for a character, but good watching it does not make.
- I’m not so sure that most of this is ‘horror’ so much as it is ‘distinct social discomfort’. Maybe that is a type of horror after all but I’m not a fan and it’s my review goddammit.
I’m not really happy I’ve watched it, in all honesty, but I’ll give it its due for the parts it got right.
Score: C+
